Does More Than I'd Hoped...

(This review is for the 6-cell onyx/black version.) As is the case with most who purchase this system, I'm not interested in doing anything requiring a lot of raw power: I bought it because its portability means I can easily cart it to class or the library. It's smaller - though slightly more heavy - than my average textbook, so I simply throw it in my bag and bring it along.

The battery life on the 6-cell is exceptional, making it ideal for students or travelers who don't have ready-made access to outlets. This is the obvious selling point of the model over its predecessor 3-cell sister (which my father owns), so I'd recommend that the buyer consider whether or not the extra battery life is needed.

I'm truly impressed with how the system performs. I expected a lot of down time booting and executing programs, but this hasn't been my experience. After tweaking MSCONFIG's startup options, I'm ready to go in under a minute. For reduction in time here, I'd also recommend scrapping the preinstalled McAffee security suite in favor of a program less resource dependent. Programs execute more quickly than I expected them to (coming from a quad-core desktop), and I am in no way disappointed with the power of this thing.

This little machine is not without its cons, however. While the keyboard is easy to use, the slightly reduced key size will make for an initial increase in the number of typos one makes. It gets easier with practice, though, and doesn't stand as a major issue in my mind. The colored cases also attract fingerprints, as other reviewers have mentioned.

I find the touchpad right/left click buttons to be extremely unhelpful, since Acer (most likely in an effort to keep the product as small as possible) put the buttons to the left and the right of the touchpad. The buttons themselves are also very stiff, and require a seemingly unnatural amount of force to activate. This is only a small gripe in the end though, considering how a quick tap on the touchpad itself simulates left-clicking. Still, scrolling and anything involving the right-click can be difficult.

Overall, if you're looking for a netbook, this one will not disappoint.
Compact, decent performance, long battery life.

Acer was probably the first company to offer this level of performance in a "netbook". With an Atom processor, 1gb of ram, a 160gb hard drive, a 6 cell battery and Windows XP home, it's a pretty credible unit if you don't mind a slightly small keyboard.

I already had a 17" Dell 9300, but after seeing the original eee realized I'd get much more use out of a laptop that was convenient to take along.

Goals were:
Small as possible with a keyboard I'd be able to touch type on.
Long battery life
Be able to run my SBIG astronomy camera.
Wireless Networking
decent performance for web, email, and running the camera.

I spent a couple months looking at what was available, and what was coming down the road. The eee 900 and 901 keyboards were just too small for me to be able to get used to. On line reviews brought my attention to the original aspire one. People were saying nice things about it's performance and build quality, and mentioned the keyboard was much easier to get used to than the eee, but complained of short battery life.

Then Acer announced this model would be coming soon.

I probably would have been OK with the linux version if it had the 6 cell battery. Linux is better than Windows for the internet, and I could probably have gotten software to run the camera. But windows XP meant the camera would run out of the box, and I wouldn't need to learn a new operating system. The hard drive seems much larger than I need, but it means I won't need to worry about running out of space.

Performance wise, it has more than enough power for my needs. It plays youtube and flash based videos better than my Dell over the wireless network connection in part because it gets a more reliable connection.

Five and a half hours seems like a realistic estimate of the battery life.

The keyboard is smaller than a normal one, but after a couple of hours I got to the point where my touch typing was reasonably accurate. The other compromise is the speakers - They're not going to fill a room with sound - but for one or two people in a typical environment, they're loud enough. I doubt there's room in the case for more substantial speakers.

Build quality is very good - certainly at least as nice as my Dell. The controls are intuitive, and overall I'm very impressed with how easy this netbook was to get used to.

And it is super portable. In round numbers, four of them stacked together would probably be about the size of a six pack of soda cans. Factor in the long battery life and you have a computer that's very convenient to bring almost anywhere.
Acer One: Best Little NetBook Made These Days (12/2008)!

Review Date: December 7, 2008
Reviewer: Wavey Davey, Southern CA, USA
Where to start this review is the question, because I have a LOT to say about it, so I guess I'll begin by saying, repeating rather, my synopsis: the Acer One 1.6Ghz/1GB/160GB/6-Cell 5700mAh battery feature set gives Acer by far the best, finest, and most versatile, best-performing Netbook being made right now, and that includes a LOT of other netbooks from HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, et al, all of them included! That's a big, long sentence, with a lot of BANG to it, so let's start with the interface and go from there.

Acer decided to use Windows XP Home Premium 32-bit for the OS for the Acer One, in all configurations apparently, and they couldn't have been more right-on, spot-on in fact, in this choice. It's pretty much fix-me-free by now, with SP3 installed, extremely well sorted-out, trouble and maintenance free, and most of all, it's fast-booting and takes little overhead from the 1GB of physical RAM that comes in this configuration, with the 160GB SATA II Western Digital (in my case) hard drive.

I heartily recommend one PC program for maintenance of the Windows Registry, and it's called simply "Registry Mechanic" which you can get over at CNET's site, as they give it "5 Turcows" rating, the highest they give utility software suites, and if you use Registry Mechanic on a regular basis, certainly after adding/removing any programs, you'll be 99% to the good in XP Home Premium SP3!

I am writing this review from an expert's point of view, trying to not get too technical for all you readers, honestly I am and will do my best there. I'm a certified Mac/Apple Tech, and though I am not an MSC Microsoft Certified Tech at this point, I can pretty much rip apart, fix/repair, and troubleshoot any OS problem on a PC also, including a tech's worst nightmare, 64-bit Vista problems!

To give just a couple examples of how nice Windows XP Home Premium SP3 works out on this little netbook would help, so let's give some. The Acer One boots up in less than 30 seconds from a cold start, and from sleep/hibernation less than 15 seconds, which is sort of miraculous considering all the potential traps, and other obstacles most Windows computers stick in the way of a fast boot process. It also does a nice job of handling multiple programs on a mere 1GB of physical RAM, which would be literally impossible, ludicrously so if it happened to be running any iteration of Vista!

Acer also ships the One with a minimum of indigenous proprietary software, very little eye candy or "brand candy" either, a nice touch, pretty much limiting that stuff to an Acer "screen saver" program, and the MacAffee Anti-Virus program, which can be quickly and judiciously dispensed with using XP's default "Add/Install Programs" application. This is a major coup for the Acer consumer, and shows good judgment on their product team's part, as we don't have to remove a trial copy of Norton Systemworks, for example, which humbles most computers of any sort with its crazy, stupid, and offensive (!) so-called "integration" into virtually all edgemarks of Windows Vista or XP systems. It's my favorite "I Hate You" program to knock and warn users against having in their PC's of any type, and will tell those of you using it now for no fault of your own probably, that your notebook/PC desktop's performance will increase by a factor of at least 50% if you REMOVE IT from the computer right now, and install something that makes sense in terms of virus, spyware, adware, and a firewall of some sort...something like Trend Micro's Internet Security program, or maybe AVG for those on a budget. Just anything other than the Norton product/program is a good thing to have in the tank, just a fyi and I'm done with the warning bit.

So, the OS is an xlnt choice here, I mean for a little netbook you don't even need XP Pro, just this simple XP Home Premium does fine in this setup, thus Acer earns bonus points for that, a most important item to congratulate them on doing, noteworthy enough to make it the No.1 item I mention in this review.

Acer does give the user a "trial copy" of MS Office 2007 for those who need a WP program, a convenient thing and not a bad choice, but personally I prefer Office 2000 Professional, which I've been using in PC's I own for some 7-8 years now, so I dispensed with the 2007 version, and installed my own Office Pro 2000 suite and took care of those needs. Other than the MacAfee Anti-Virus problem/program, there's little else to mention that you have to get rid of right off the bat to streamline, smooth, and speed up the netbook's OS and responsiveness, so kudos to Acer for not burdening the new owner with a ton of BS and crapola as I like to call a manufacturer's eye candy and "freebies" which are always more trouble than a benefit in PC's, it turns out.

With a Mac everything you get is functional and virtually necessary for the machine's processing and program inventory, while with PC's they're always trying to sell you something, clutter up the OS with virtual garbage of one sort or another, so Acer really earns my praise here by not trying to give the user anything except a nice, fast, virtually ready for market netbook instead of a major project, one that needs a lot of coaxing and prior-feeding to make it perform normally, or shall I say exceptionally well versus being a slug in the rug.

The best place to start praise for this netbook in my view is with the hardware choices that Acer made for this little machine, because there are certainly plenty of choices on the PC side to start out with, and they did an exceptional job with the One, choosing everything with care, simplicity, and xlnt performance in mind. First there's the Intel Atom N270 CPU, the heart of the beast so to speak, and at 1.6Ghz with 533Mhz PC SDRAM along for the ride, the netbook is plenty fast, has a quick, but inexpensive memory ramp-up feature set, another good choice by the maker.

The CPU uses an incredible 10% (yes, read it and remember it) of the potential energy outlay for a comparable AMD, or Intel C2Duo CPU chip/die set, which does two things you should remember: 1) it has very little overhead in terms of battery use, and 2) it generates few heat management problems, which everyone should know and understand is the heart of most notebook/netbook problems. HEAT KILLS CPU's AND NOTEBOOKs, it's just that simple to write or say, and the Intel Atom N270 is a miracle of design and functionality that does what many CPU's would kill or die for, which they'll never have, and that's provide a modicum of speed with virtually no footprint of heat, or battery drain! Isn't that a treat!! I think so, so another xlnt choice by Acer there.

The hardware features a fast 5400RPM SATA II 2.5" 160GB hard drive, which should be plenty large enough for even the most rampant physical space user, and it's best to note that here 2nd. The SDRAM @ 533Mhz works well with the equally fast system bus, so tasks are handled well even though there's only 1GB of physical RAM.

The only shortcoming here is that RAM, as it's NOT user serviceable/accessible, with an Intel netbook chassis design that will allow a maximum of 1.5GB of physical RAM addressable, so even if you want to void your warranty and take it apart and install a 1GB DIMM in that single SDRAM slot (512MB being hard-soldered onto the chassis, and not removable) , to yield 1.5GB of SDRAM, the benefits are questionable.

I would like to, at some point, try out a 2GB DIMM in that slot, and see if the netbook functions and addresses 2.5GB of SDRAM as that would make a lot more sense in terms of increasing the available physical RAM allocation, so when I get in the mood later this month with a weekend-extended off, I'll take an hour or two to do that exercise, and if successful I'll update this review accordingly!

Let's talk for a minute about the netbooks' Wi-Fi (for better words) concepts, and see how it works in practice vs. theory right now. The most important aspect of these netbooks that are out now is the connectivity issue(s), because certainly everyone expects one to work wirelessly out of the box! And so it is with the Acer One's setup.

The network adapter is an Atheros AR5007EG "A, B & G" (notice, no "N" availability) unit, and it's got a simple physical switch on the front of the netbook for turning it off and on, and I might mention that it's switched "ON" at the factory, so the moment you fire up the Acer One it's going to be searching for a wireless network, and will find one/them quickly... that is it will hierarchically list them in order of strength and logical importance in the Network Control Panel without you prompting it to do so. That's a nice feature, and Acer scores points here also.

If you're using a typical user's WPA-TKIP network encryption vs an "open" or unprotected network at home/office, you'll be prompted for the password once the notebook is fired up past the User Configuration Screens of XP Home Premium, and once that password is entered check the box for "remember me", and you're set as far as connecting to your local wireless network from then on. On a scale of 1-10 for connectivity, I'm giving the Atheros network adapter a solid 9 for performance, if you wondered about it. It picked up not only my network here at my home office, which includes 8 other Macs and PC's of various sorts, but it also scored my 3 neighbors' networks also, without any problems.

So Acer's placement and structure of the physical part of the adapter is good also, ie the "antenna" is routed through the little chassis strategically, apparently (I have yet to discover it by taking it apart, but will soon!), and it's a strong network performer, which is essential in a notebook/netbook.

I haven't taken the Acer One on an outside trip yet, though we will definitely be using it for travel instead of my tried (read tired also) and true Apple iBook G3, vintage 2002 @ 600Mhz G3 territory with a 12" screen vs. the Acer One's 8.9" widescreen LCD display, so I can't comment on its ability to pick up outside Wi-Fi 'HotSpots' but I'll betcha it's just fine in that regard.

Now we come to the details, and they are the best and most fun parts of the Acer One, so here goes...

The 3 USB 2.0 ports are a killer connectivity system (ie very very good!), with twins on the right side of the chassis, and a single on the left side, along with an Ethernet port, plus a VGA portal for extended desktop duty, since the Intel Mobile 945 Express graphics chip will support an external monitor, a very nice feature if you want to do a presentation with PowerPoint via a large VGA LCD display, or perhaps hook it up to a larger screen for a slide show at work, or for friends and family during the holidays! Very versatile feature set here!!

Also of import are the twin card reader slots, the left side being the one for an SD/SDHC card (yup, it WILL read SDHC cards, no limit as to size AFAIK), the right side slot for everything else, MMC, Memory Stick Plus, etc etc...just no CompactCards that's about all it doesn't provide for, so you Nikon/Canon folks will have to use an adapter and make do with that! As for the network switch setup, the switch is on the front, but the LED is on the top surface where the keyboard is, so nicely done, Acer.

The power port for the AC adapter is on the left side, and it's not an ergonomically quiescent system like Apple's "Mag-Safe" system, and you CAN rip it out of the Acer One by tripping on the cord and potentially damaging the netbook, so the usual cautions about the AC adapter apply here...it's NOT an Apple product, typical PC stuff here with the power port/battery charging mechanism. I wish PC manufacturers would learn their lessons about this intimate subject, but they don't, or won't, as I can't think of a PC notebook with a truly ergonomic AC adapter port offhand. Just be careful with this part of the Acer One, and all will be good to go!

That pretty much covers the feature set and ports, so to wrap this up I'll mention a couple other items and be done with this review in a flash, I promise!

The Synaptic Pointing Device (trackpad in AppleSpeak) is easy to master, if you're not using an externally driven laser/USB mini-mouse like we do for pointing duty (we chose a Logitech V220 for this notebook at Amazon.com for about $25 shipped, a truly superior laser mini-mouse IMO, and one I've grown fond of for use with my "normal" Acer laptop, a bit dated, but still useful 5920-6727 15.4" widescreen GemStone Chassis unit). The trackpad has the normal right and left side clickables to it, it's infinitely adjustable for touch and speed via the Windows XP "Mice and..." control panel, and it works well without using an external USB/laser mouse, as there are times (like when laying in bed doing some late-night web surfing with the Acer One) when an external mouse is superfluous and impossible to use.

The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to to be fast on it, but fast you can be with a little adaptation, and if your hands aren't too big to make such things impossible. It's physically about 60% the size of the "normal" keyboard on a regular laptop, lacks the number system keys totally (they just aren't there), but of course has Page Up, Down, Side to Side, full function keys from F1 through F12 for controlling the boot process, initiating a file recovery or System Recovery exercise, whatever...it's all there for that sort of thing, so score more points for Acer One there!

Touch? On the keyboard, 1-10, 10 being the best possible, I'm going to give it a 7.5, because once you're acclimated to using it via its small size, the feel could be a little better IMO, there's a definite "click" and "clack" to the keyboard strokes, but of course nothing like a vane-type keyboard from the old days...just a subtle reminder that you're not using a $2000+ notebook's keyboard, and it IS a lot smaller physically than a normal keyboard, takes some getting used to for speedy typing, and judicious and deft use of your fingers lest you be constantly making mistakes.

The LCD screen, at a resolution of 1024x600 pixels (natively so) is plenty big with the widescreen aspect ratio working for the Acer One to yield a much "bigger" feel and view, with outside viewing from odd angles possible, but certainly less so than with a full sized screen. With 32-bit color quality picked (highest possible), it's clear, crisp, clean and has xlnt definition, even with the smaller fonts required (or shall I say necessary) with an 8.9" diagonal sized LCD display.

I wouldn't want to do a term paper on the Acer One, but for nominal typing and WP work, and certainly net surfing and keyboard fun, the LCD display works well. I'm giving the Acer One a solid 9 out of 10 score for the display, which is by the way, nicely set off, and back from the edges of the frame, but not too distantly so, which is a good way or designing in some protection for the display, while still leaving plenty of room for the ports of a WebCam and a mono microphone, the Acer "Crystal Brite" ("Crystal Eye" Webcam!) technology setup, standard fare in their products if you're at all familiar with how Acer makes a laptop.

The webcam and microphone do work great, of course, as you would expect them to, but I wouldn't want to use any pictures taken with the little webcam for Photoshop work, for example. It's plenty good for local use and net use, and I've used it for conferencing with Skype, and Yahoo Messenger clients with successful results in both cases.

Finally, there's the incredible performance of the 6-cell battery with this netbook's Intel Atom CPU, and it yields up to 5-6+ hours or MORE time on the machine, if you maximize Energy Saver settings, allow CPU cycling, etc etc, and really squeeze out the last drop from the tank. I was totally and completely surprised when I installed my favorite PC laptop battery monitor system on the Acer One, Embtech's EmBatPower utility, and found out that the Lithium Ion 6-cell battery has 5700+ mAh of power reserve built in! WOW! That's a big battery for even a normal laptop! And in the Acer One it just kills any competition in the "last a long time" department!!

The Acer One scores 11 on battery performance, OFFSCALE TOTALLY!! You just can't buy a more CPU efficient, long lasting battery/laptop/netbook battery system than the 6-cell system in the Acer One. It's the meat and potatoes of all battery systems I've even come across, and I've seen a few that claimed to have 5-6-hour capacity, but never delivered. THIS ONE DOES!!

Construction yields a solid 9.5 on the Acer One, as the netbook's LCD screen hinge system is very heavy-duty, and should last a long long time even with severe/heavy use, has a nice "feel" to it in terms of being strong and viable, it's not a weak point of the netbook where with others it can be and is a weakness. The materials for a sub-$500 netbook are supreme, the feature set is almost if not perfect (only lacks FireWire, if you care to be ultra-critical about this sort of thing!), it just seems to "all be there" with the Acer One netbook.

Overall, I'm giving the Acer One 5 stars, or 10 out of 10 if you want the extended version of a rating, for overall performance, feature set, battery performance/life, construction, and that xlnt Crystal Brite Acer 8.9" LCD widescreen display with its 1024x600 pixel size. I like everything about the Acer One, especially the sub-$400 pricing that's available at certain places on the 'Net these days, for this particular configuration, the top of the line now.

Have I covered everything? Geez, I hope so! The only thing I haven't mentioned is the light weight, being 894 grams if you're counting it that way, no battery, or 1223 grams WITH the 6-cell battery in place...still well South of 3 pounds! Trust me, that's its accurate weight, as I just used my xlnt Radio Shack USB Scale on the Acer One, and double and triple checked how much it weighs.

I can't tell you how impressive this netbook is, and it's obvious why it's the No.1 selling computer of ANY TYPE OR KIND at Amazon.com right now, why it's stealing business from every quarter of the market. Acer can hardly keep up production to supply the demand for the darn thing, it's so popular right now! So if you want it all, "the works" in a netbook, there is no substitute: get the Acer One in this configuration, with the 6-cell battery, the 160GB SATA II hard drive, 1GB SDRAM, and all those standard features that are killing the competition.

From a tech's viewpoint this is a great system to be able to service, it's a simple one to take apart and get to the important pieces (don't tell Acer I said that just yet!), and the 'modular' chassis gets a "10" too! From the consumer's viewpoint there is no finer bargain in the marketplace than the Acer One "LU.S050B.133", Model ZG5, configuration (the one off the product's box).

I've written a LOT of reviews over the years for various computer systems and products, but I cannot emphasize enough how good a product this is, especially compared to all the rest of the netbooks out there for sale.

The Acer One ZG5 is the No.1 selling computer of ANY SIZE, TYPE, or CONFIGURATION in the world right now, and there's a good reason why. Acer did their homework, found all the right pieces to the puzzle the consumer wanted in a netbook, and here's the result! Get one now, or get one ASAP, because you're missing out on all the fun, all the goodness anyone could have possibly built into a netbook in the year 2008-9.

I predict that Acer will keep making these bulletproof little market-killers until the sun stops shining in the West and its competition is crushed even further than it already is. Good Luck to HP, Toshiba, Dell, the whole lot of you other PC manufacturers, because this is the King of the Hill, and you'd best get used to looking up at the new No.1 computer maker in the world, Acer and the Acer One!

ADDENDUM 01-20-2009:

I was up late working on a hardware project of very complex capacities one night last month (Dec), and a thought hit me: I had 2GB (1 GB DIMMs) of Apple-Spec OEM SamSung PC 6400/800Mhz SDRAM (SODIMMs) sitting in my "extra RAM" box, right next to my workstation's chair where I sit at the controls of 2 PC's, a Dual Core G5 PowerMac 2.3Ghz running a FirmTek SeriTek 2eEN4 RAID 0 configuration (bootable RAID), and my trusty 24" Intel 3.06Ghz iMac, which is my main photo editor. Interesting thought!

So I decided to tear the little Acer One apart right then and there, at 4AM or so, and put on my grounding cable system, plugged myself into the wall socket (literally, that's how it works!) to complete the anti-static treatment, found my trusty jeweler's mini-screw-driver and TORX sets, and set them next to me, and in about 10 minutes I had carefully, quickly taken the One apart down to the logic board, bare as a naked lady, ribbon cables for the trackpad, LCD display, and keyboard carefully taped down where they could do no harm. I pulled the 512MB SODIMM out of its carrier on the underside of the double-tiered logic board setup, carefully measured it with a micro-micrometer, measured the Apple 1GB SODIMM, and it was a match! I had already looked up the specs of the Acer SODIMM I had removed, and its registry and buffers were compatible with the Apple SODIMM, so in it went! Snap! The carrier accepted the Apple RAM easily, and I had the netbook back together in about 20 minutes, taking my time and not over-torquing the mini-screws on the chassis, especially those connecting into ABS plastic!

If you're careful, ground yourself 120% before you start working, and do NOT get up and move around while you're working to generate any static electricity, and DO NOT DROP components onto each other, or hard surfaces, you too can do the above exercise in a few short minutes. It's really not too hard, nothing complex about it, just BE CAREFUL with those 25 or so mini-screws you've got to remove, draw pictures if necessary about which ones go where when you disassemble the One, so you'll remember where they all fit when you re-assemble it.

Cute netbook though! And easy easy easy to take apart, and get to the important things, mainly the RAM and the hard drive, should you ever want to replace the OEM HD with something larger, say a Samsung F1 Spinpoint H6 500GB SATA II 2.5" HD, which I'll do next to the Acer One...

Anyway, the good news: it all worked out just great. The Acer One *LIKES* the Apple DIMM a lot, and is performing extremely well with the higher-clocked SODIMM installed. 1.5GB of RAM is a huge improvement over 1GB of RAM in the Acer One, as you're increasing the physical RAM by 50%, so expect BIG performance increases, faster boot times, more application-friendly OS windows for multiple-program-open situations, etc etc.

I have found that the One cannot address a 2GB DIMM under any circumstances, so don't try it if you were thinking about it...

The logic board's BIOS just is not able to deal with the high bandwidth a 2GB DIMM would generate, so until and/if Acer decides to use a different BIOS arrangement on the logic board, 1.5GB is the limit on RAM in the Aspire One netbook series.

Once more however, I will warn those of you who have never taken apart a laptop to be very cautious, and careful, and deliberate, and operate in S L O W M O T I O N when you are doing this installation...just use common sense, keep track of those mini-screws, one by one if necessary with a diagram drawn as to where they all go, because some ARE different than others, and you must re-assemble the One with the correct screws in the correct sequence, or there will be problems, and we don't want that do we?

I simply wanted to update this Review with the news that 1.5GB of physical RAM in the Acer One is a good thing to have, and if you know what you are doing, you are NOT limited to using a 533Mhz SODIMM of PC 5300 SDRAM. If the buffers, timing, and registry sequences are good to go with a PC 6400 800Mhz SODIMM, it will work in the Acer One, certainly at least as good as with a PC 5300 533Mhz SODIMM. That's just a FYI should you happen to have any Apple-spec 1GB DIMMs laying around from an update/upgrade to an Intel iMac, Mac Mini, or MacBook of a certain vintage, as those type of 1GB DIMMs will work perfectly fine in the Acer One, and I shall testify accordingly if asked about it!

I don't know if there are any actual benefits to running higher-clocked SODIMMs in the Acer One's logic board/chassis arrangement, but what the hey, I have proved it possible to use higher-spec'd SODIMMs in the Acer One with success, my One using that SODIMM for some 5 weeks and counting now.

You know what, tech work is pretty interesting some times, and this is one of them...I got to use some spare parts that were sitting around here doing nothing at all, and I got to save a little $$$ in the deal too...

Enjoy your Acer One, and remember one thing about this Acer product that IS important: it is apparently very "flexible" and easy to work with in terms of upgrading/updating the components inside the box. Be very, very careful should any of you attempt this exercise, use a correct guide/instruction set from a reliable source, specifically on the netbook you own...as there ARE differences between the different models of the Acer One netbook, difference INSIDE of the chassis that could throw you a curve ball if you're not acting wisely.

Solid Netbook

Review Date: October 23, 2008
Reviewer: Evan J. Larkin,
When I purchased this netbook, I purchased it to be my bring-wherever-you-go laptop. It has served me for about a week now with flying colors.

Here are some notes about the machine that I have made over the week:

Touchpad:

The touchpad of the Acer Aspire One is likely to be the first deal-breaker for most people. Firstly, it is *very* small: about the size of a postage stamp, if you strip away the area devoted to the scroll bar. Secondly, the mouse buttons are to the left and right side, and are quite hard to find in the dark.

Most importantly, by default, the touchpad scroll "wheel" will only scroll *down.* I haven't looked too much into fixing this, because the I make a habit of using the page up/down keys, but it's still something to be aware of. As of now, I am unsure of if there is a way to get it to scroll *up.* The buttons themselves are hard to press; this can be a good thing, though, because I haven't had the ball of my hand press them down while typing (it always happens to me on other laptops).

All said and done, this is the only touchpad I've used that hasn't caused me no end to headaches, so please take this review for what you will.

Screen:

The screen is very bright, even on minimum brightness. I've never had to turn it up above minimum brightness. It gets an A+ here.

The screen size is, however, very small. It's a netbook though, so that's to be expected. Be aware, though, that most websites are designed for much larger screens vertically, and you will find yourself doing quite a lot of scrolling.

Battery:

My first charge of the battery lasted 14 hours. I was incredibly surprised at this, because I was hearing reports of the 3 cell battery lasting only 2 to 3 hours. My second charge of the battery has lasted 5 so far, and still has 30% remaining. In other words, charge length shouldn't be a problem (unless you plan on watching multimedia or the like on it, which will drain the battery much quicker).

The battery *does* stick out the back. It is not flush with the machine like in the original product pictures. However, I haven't found this to be terribly restrictive. When in use, you can't see it anyway, and it doesn't seem to rest any differently with or without it.... This should not be a dealbreaker.

Keyboard:

The first thing about the keyboard I noticed is its lack of easy to get to home and end keys. I use these keys heavily on my desktop, but I suppose I'll just need to develop new habits for use with the netbook.

As far as typing goes, my typing rates did not change in the least, switching from a full sized keyboard to the netbook. It feels very natural to type on the netbook, and if you are worried about moving to the smaller keyboard *don't be.* Note: I have not used many other netbooks to compare.

That said, the page up and down keys are incredibly accessible. Once I got used to them, it made everything so much easier (I even found myself forgetting that there weren't single keypress home or end keys).

Case:

The case is shiny. Very Shiny. So shiny, that every speck of dust and grime shows up as clear as day. If you suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder, either be sure to carry around cleaning wipes just for the computer, or find a different model.

The case is also fairly easy to "scratch." Wiping my sweatshirt over it one day caused lines to appear that looked like scratches. They weren't, of course, but it was annoying none the less.

All in all, I would have liked a less shiny case, but I knew that going in, so please take it for what you will.

Boot Time:

Currently, my machine boots from cold in 25 seconds. From standby, it only takes 3 seconds to resume. I removed the mcafee trial, the Word trial, the WinDVD software (more about that later) and most of the other free software.

I added: Skype, gVIM, OpenOffice, Ventrilo, ZoneAlarm Firewall, and Google Chrome.

I'm more than happy with the boot time of the machine.

Installed programs:

It came with a lot of installed trials, which bog down your computer immensely. With them, boot time was 1:30. Without, it was 0:25. They include: Office 2007, WinDVD, McAfee Security Suite.

Office 2007 I removed to replace with OpenOffice. I find it easier to use, and more user friendly, but ultimately this one is up to you.

WinDVD: Remove it. If you don't, I question your intelligence. There is no DVD (or CD for that matter) drive in the machine, so this software does exactly nothing. If you want to watch Multimedia, this is an incredibly bad choice.

McAfee Security Suite: McAfee is a good security solution if you want to pay oodles of money. I do not want to pay oodles of money, so I removed it. It was the cause of most of the boot up time originally, please be aware.

Size/Weight:

The size and weight of the machine is just perfect. I can hold it up in one hand, and it's not encumbering in the least. It fits in a side bag that I've owned for a while, and it just works, overall.

Bags:

Unlike other models of the Acer Aspire One, this one did *not* come with a protective liner for transporting the computer. Please be aware that you *will* need to buy your own liner, if you want one. This is almost a necessity if you intend to keep scratches off the case.

This is an awesome machine

I got this at Best Buy for $700 and this is an excellent machine for its price. You are getting an HD monitor, built in webcam and microphone, silent keyboard which is perfectly sized for an adult, a beautiful interface, a lovely touchpad to turn up your volume, mute, play, fast forward and rewind... a 64 bit system with 4 GB of RAM capable of holding 8 GB of RAM... amazing. the mouse touchpad has a scroll function on its side. this computer has state of the art audio, (the speakers of this brand are very costly), a dedicated video graphics card, and a very powerful processor. coupled with its sleek design you cannot go wrong. its versatile, and it is very easy to set up networking. I have it set up in my home network. bought it 2 days ago and its fully functional. all laptops are more delicate than desktops and not a replacement. i got a service plan through BB in the case of hardware damage such as the monitor. this is always wise. anyway, take care of it and you have a great machine with great graphics capability and i already have an HP desktop and i'd say its comparable if not better.
Feature packed and priced well below the competition.

I will start this review by saying that my old laptop was beyond slow and well past its prime, so just about anything would have been a huge improvement. I did a fair amount of research and this laptop was by far the most feature-packed for the price. The same specs with a different brand name would have cost me $700-$900 more, easily.

The laptop is loaded with entertainment features like webcam, bluray, HDMI port, 4 USB ports, TWO headphone jacks and lightscribe! I will admit, the lightscribe was a huge plus. If you don't know, it's a way to laser etch artwork/words onto burned CDs/DVDs instead of using sticker labels or writing on them with permanent markers. I have no complaints with any of this stuff because these are all features I've not had until now and I'm just excited to have them at all. The laptop is blazingly fast compared to my old one (but that's not saying much). It has a neat touch bar above the keyboard that lets you quickly: mute/unmute, control volume, play, pause, forward, rewind, stop, and even turn off the wifi. It's a huge laptop, you may have a hard time finding a bag it will fit in (seriously), but it's not an issue for me. I love having such a large screen and I don't move the laptop around much (I would not have purchased a laptop this large for heavy travel). I also love that it has a full sized keyboard (YAY!) and a separate number keypad off to the right for super speedy number crunching! It has a cute little remote control so you can hook the laptop up to your TV and use it as a sometimes bluray/DVD player, it even stores in the side of the laptop when not in use. I also like that this machine doesn't seem to get hot at all...my old laptop you could fry eggs on that thing for how hot it ran!

The not so great stuff:

It comes with Vista and I don't like it, but it's not the laptop's fault, they all come with Vista now, don't they.

It has a lot of bloatware (a lot of preinstalled software that you probably don't need and just having it there takes up space and hogs memory/resources) and no easy way to remove it without doing a wipe/reinstall

...and it does not come with Vista CDs to do that which complicates things a bit.

I read a lot of reviews talking about the keys being almost unreadable, for everything else that came with this machine for this price...I was willing to paint them on myself if it was really that bad! I'm not sure if HP fixed the problem or if I'm not using the laptop in the same conditions as those with the complaints, but I can see/read them fine (I use the laptop indoors with ambient/indirect sun lighting for the most part). The keys and laptop are a metallic bronze color, so it has a bit of a mirror like finish that I could certainly do without...but it is not nearly as obnoxious/annoying/blinding as the laptops with that chrome/silver mirror finish. That's all with the aesthetics; not the important stuff (not to me anyway).

For the price and being chock full of features, I can't justify taking off a star for any of the very minor flaws. I've had this for almost a month now and I love it. I will update this review once I've had it longer should anything change or need mentioning.
HP Pavilion DV7 Is Great for Powerful On The GO Computing

Review Date: May 15, 2009
Reviewer: The Anomaly, Pittsburgh, PA
This laptop is a huge bargain for its price. It provides for more computing power and functionality than any laptop in its class/price-range.

The most appealing feature of this laptop is its superior casing and finish. Its very glossy and stands out with a bright light of the HP logo on the top lid (back of the monitor). The illuminating MediaSmart touch-sensitive functions above the keyboard also make it a uniquely designed laptop. Its color has an eloquent yet stylish appeal.

This laptop is not all cosmetic, however. It comes with enough processing power and memory to take on heavy duty multimedia for your audio and video needs. The sound quality is amazing with the Altec Lansing speakers providing SRS premium sound. It even has a great built in HP web cam with HP software to make taking tasteful pictures and recording professional video a cinch for even an amateur. This model does not have the built in TV Tuner or thumb print security features advertised on similar HP models. It does come with a preloaded version of Vista with SP1 and has Microsoft Office Home and Student trial version packaged for an out-of-the-box experience.

The laptop display is crystal clear with stunning graphic quality on a 17" monitor. Plenty of room with a full functioning keyboard and number pad that will make you feel as though you are using a desktop keyboard. I tried this laptop out for an entire day when I received it and it has proven well worth its price.

I was very satisfied with the Next Day shipping as the laptop arrived on time and had no noticeable defects. There was some adhesive tape stuck to the edge of the laptop, but was easily removed and with no physical damage to the device.

Incredibly this computer packs a lot of punch and is still light weight. It does not overheat even on your lap with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. Beautiful LED lights flood the keyboard against the glossy chrome finish making it a perfect display for use in a dark or dim lit room.

The WiFi card is wonderful with extended range. I was able to pick up my router from the end of my drive way and even at the end of the street. The remote is included for media functionality. You can listen to your music or watch videos without having to touch the keyboard or mouse. The wireless remote fits neatly inside the dedicated slot above the SD-MS/Pro card reader. You've got 4 USB ports (2 on each side) and an place to plug in your HDMI cable to your HD TV. This is wonderful for me to give live presentations on an HD TV at work at conferences.

This is definitely a lot of bang for you buck. I had a Compaq Pressario laptop before this, which I bought on a limited budget at the time. I didn't think the battery would die on me so soon. This HP was definitely worth the extra cash.

I was originally thinking of buying a Dell before I bought the HP DV7, but considering the huge difference in price and much faster delivery this was a sweet deal. The Dell would have taken 4 days longer to ship with a higher shipping cost (on expedited shipping) and with the same specifications (at a $500 price tag difference). I bought this at around 11:40 PM on Tuesday from amazon and had it on my doorstep by 2:00 PM on Thursday.

Two thumbs up!
A One-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Pros: You Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (very conservative to the battery as well as very powerful)
4GB DDR2-800 Samsung RAM-2 sticks 2GB each it is maxed out
Windows Vista 64bit flies even while testing on VMware with no RAM left to host pretty much, even runs Windows 7 x64 although lacking the extra bluetooth profiles included in Vista.
nVidia GeForce 9600M GT w/ 512MB VRAM running both my Sony Bravia 52V5200 or something like it as well as the main screen. Takes both without a lag, the TV on 1920x1080 and the main one at 1440x900.
Intel 5100AGN Wifi adapter
HDMI out with sound as well which is a great thing to have
eSATA in for hard drives.
Comes with 320 GB hard drive space - 298GB formatted
BD-ROM combo drive w/ DVD-+R/RW, it plays Pineapple Express and Eagle Eye without a hitch but you should still have the charger plugged in just in case.
Very long battery life. I haven't measured during use but it idles at a good 6 hours in both Vista and 7.
Excellent color gamut and clean display

Cons: I got it during CCity liquidation, well my parents did :)
Loaded with too much junk, didn't even bother starting Windows, went directly to reformat and reinstall and it loads within 40 sec.
5400RPM hard drive, still acceptable for me.
One dead pixel in the top center but unnoticable
Bluetooth and Wifi switch both in one touch button, you cant use one or the other.

All these minor problems did not repel me away from this masterpiece. I was a little surprised though to find it has bluetooth as well. It runs Windows 7 build 7000 64bit as good as Vista, similar battery life except 7 provides a few minutes more. It did come loaded with the usual OEM junk but I had my Vista disc, entered my product key from this machine and it activated fine. Installation for both Vista and 7 took no more than 20 minutes overall for it to complete everything from beginning to end. Windows 7 got the WiFi chip and the ethernet out of the box as well. It saw the 9600GT as a regular VGA card. I ran all the driver installs with Admin rights and Vista compatibility and they all work fine except the integrated bluetooth, it is still stuck on the basic profiles. I do not use Lightscribe very much so that does not apply to me. There is a model exact to this one only it has both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Who needs HD-DVD anyways, the original movies are already out on Blu-Ray anyways.

Great laptop for a desktop replacement

HP Pavilion DV7-1260US is an excellent laptop if you're looking to replace a desktop. I would not recommend it for travel due to its size and weight, but if you're looking to replace your desktop this is an outstanding choice. The thing that attracted me to HP was the great display, it stands above anything else I looked at. This is a great looking laptop with the bronze color scheme. On top of all the outstanding features of this computer I got an awesome deal at BrandSmart USA. [...]. After a week of use I've found nothing I dislike about this computer.

An Aspire that Inspires

Review Date: February 12, 2009

Acer made a nice mini-notebook into a better one. The screen is larger and just as bright. The keyboard is still great (for a small one). No weirdly placed right shift key placement (Asus, Lenovo, etc). The mousepad buttons are below the touchpad not along side (yeah). It is now easy to increase ram or replace the drive without entirely dismantling the unit and voiding the warranty. I have no complaints. I loved the first one, this one fixes all the criticisms of the first one. Nothing major just refinement. Someone is listening to its customers and it is Acer.
Addendum: the screen is glossy, and initial orders are getting the larger 5900ma battery. It stick out the back a bit, but the run time is amazing. It must be the longest running mini-laptop out there, including the new Asus 1000he and the Samsung 10nc, for much less $$. That's a win in my book. Easy to touch type (for me), good looks, I need a xd-card slot and this one has a 7-1, there is a bit a bloat ware, just delete and put on what you need, the HD is large enough.
Spectacular! Super Pleased!

I was worried about getting one as I have had a 12" laptop and was not happy with screen size. But this screen is SO bright it does not even become a issue, not to mention the 1064x600 really makes it seem bigger!

Another bonus, this baby runs 7.5 to 8 hours due to the 5800Amh 6 cell battery! Sweet. Very happy with that. I heard most were shipping with the 4400Amh 6 cell which gives your 5-6 hours. I can run this all day or two before recharge, very nice! I have to keep looking at battery indicator in dis-belief that the battery is still 75% or 50%, it just lasts forever!

This is super portable obviously, and really how laptops SHOULD be. You can put on one leg, it doesn't weigh you down when actually sitting in your lap which is nice. I have had many laptops over the years, screen sizes and this one wins hands down for price, and performance. The unit is strong heavy duty case, compared to some newer thin plastic laptops.
A Pleasant Surprise to an unexpected user.

Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Sapphire Blue

I know there are plenty or reviews about the good and bad things about this tinny little piece of hardware. I will not be talking about how good it is but rather WHY it seems good.

First a bit about me. I'm a mac user, love technology and are very critical of details that can make it or break it.

The Acer Aspire One 150 is simply more of what I was expecting, for less that I thought I was paying. I will number the reasons WHY I think such to be the case:

1) Quality. I know you can get them at walmart and they are quite on the cheap side. But that has nothing to do with the built, feel and performance of this device. Coming from my Macbook Pro early 2008, I cannot say that there is much room for improvement. Besides a backlite keyboard LOL.

2) Performance. How many times will you hear a Mac user praising a Windows machine, specially running on an atom N270? Well here it is one. I did not modify the OS or got Linux on it (yet) because I'm review what you will be getting right of the box. The machine is very snappy, booting is a breeze and this is the first time I use a brand new windows machine without reinstalling the OS. I only downloaded AVG free anit virus and unistalled MacAfee and I'm running this baby. Video Playback is very decent. The 5800 mAmp battery 59 Watts rated is just wonderful.

3) Design. They keyboard is just good, it could be better but I really don't see much room for improvement. It is a 300 dollar machine for Christ sake. Screen, I have to use it in the lowest setting, the LED is great and resolution on the spot. Size and weight are very decent. I actually wish it was a bit wider, then again that is my macbook pro bias. Key layout it works wonders for me so far. Functions and commands are easy to execute on it and it is simply pleasent to use sitting, laying in bad or standing. Viewing angle is good, although video videos have a natural narrower viewing angle.

3) Features. Great battery life (I would put it in the 7 hours range to be fair with real usage). The Audio card is fantastic, it is as good as the macbook pro, no exageration. The atheros WIFI card got reception where my macbook pro doesn't have it and other computers as well. The HD is very fast, It copies data very quickly and don't be fool by the 1 G RAM on it, it is plenty to handle netbook oriented computing tasks. The touchpad, in conflict with other reviews out there, there is advance calibration software included in the machine that will allow you to use all the single finger scrolling features and flicker in no time (need to be calibrated first). And just in case people didn't know there are actually sensors that detect your hand on the resting pad in relation to the touchpad as to avoid unnecessary input.

4) Personal Gripes: I know these are not really serious concerns but I'm pretty sure they will make the product better overall. First, dual booting. I mean come on how hard it will be to add ubuntu remix to this little wonder. Just as to get a taste of it. Touchpad buttons, I wish i didn't have to go all the way to the very end of them to click and there was more feedback, maybe I need to get used to them. N280 processor, I know it does not make it or break it but it would be nicer to have the newer atom processor here. Although I know it is not a deal breaker at all. Last but not least, Intel GMA 950??? Come one, it works but this is by far the weakest point on the device. I know we are not doing high end graphics in here, but give me some better integrated graphic action LOL

Overall, I give it 5 starts because I find no serious flaws with this product to reduce a single start. It is more that what I bargained for and I'm very sure that it will be a very good addition to my technological arsenal for years to come lol...
Better than expected.

I'm very impressed with this netbook. I ordered mine as soon as I heard they were initially shipping with 5800 mAH batteries and I was pleased to find mine came with one. It is rated 5800 mAh / 59 Wh, and the model number is UM08B52. Windows estimates close to 8 hours of battery life when fully charged and it seems to be accurate. The display is glossy and looks great. It boots very quickly although I haven't timed it. Performance is better than expected - I can't tell a difference between this and my Thinkpad R61 when running Microsoft Office applications or browsing the web. I'm not sure if it has a fan because I haven't heard it kick in yet. It stays fairly cool except when charging. The keyboard takes some getting used to. It has great feel but I can tell it is slightly smaller than the HP netbooks I've tried in stores. As noted in some reviews, the mouse buttons are pretty stiff but after a couple of days I've gotten used to it.
Great Mini, HIGHLY recommend especially while they ship with a 5800mh battery.

I just received my mini yesterday and I love it. Much better than I expected although it takes a little (just a bit) getting use to the slightly smaller keyboard thanks to my fat fingers. The screen is great, it is nice and bright, as is the overall feel of the unit. It feels quite sturdy and is so quiet you wonder if it even has a spinning harddrive (it does). It stays cool and it charges very quickly. Some may think this unit is to small, but that is what I like about it. I bought it to take with me, to keep in the car, to travel with, etc. It fits that bill exactly. This is just great for surfing the web, jotting down notes or using as an mp3 player, etc. You probably don't want to use it as your main PC unless you just use a PC to do what I mentioned above, but I guess if you attach an external monitor, keyboard and mouse there is little reason why you can't.

I was originally going to wait a bit more before buying it, but the lure of possibly getting the 5800 mh battery instead of the 4400 convinced me to buy it now. It worked I got a 5800 mh battery that last about 8 hours SWEET!!

Now my boss is thinking about buying one, it's just a matter of time, because he's drooling.

The only down side is the nice blue cover shows finger prints, though they wipe off easily, and the mousepad is a little tricky for me but I have never liked mousepads so that's just me.

I may get another one soon, since my son is already eyeing this one. Oh the joys of being a pushover!

UPDATE: Boss just ordered, couldn't hold out any longer, he is weak. My friends husband, Oscar is interested in one, it's just a matter of time, these things sell themselves!

High Definition That Doesn't Break the Bank

The 13.3-inch LED-backlit display offers bright, vibrant visuals and advanced energy efficiency, and it has a high-definition resolution (1366 x 768) and 16:9 ratio display for watching movies and HDTV programming without annoying black bars. It's supported by an integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics processor for cinematic visual quality. Equipped with HDMI connectivity, you can easily stream media whether you're on the move or through an external display at home or in the office.

The UL30A is complemented with Altec Lansing speakers--30 percent more powerful compared to those found on conventional notebooks--and SRS premium surround sound, providing high-quality audio playback without the need to connect to external speakers. The angle of the speakers also allows audio to be "bounced" upwards from any surface to provide better amplification, delivering a wider frequency range, which in turn produces lower pitches that allow users to hear every reverberation of the drums, as well as every note in pitch perfect quality.

Jump Lists
New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e‑mail messages or playing music.

Improved Windows Taskbar
In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back.

One of the best under $700 notebooks

Review Date: October 24, 2009
Reviewer: Jeff Carroll, St. Joseph, IL USA
Just received my Asus UL30A-X5 yesterday. After much review, and a try-out with an Acer 1410, I decided that I wanted a full-sized chiclet/island keyboard and the larger screen. I'm already quite pleased with my decision. At the <$700 price point, this is an excellent notebook.

Pros
- Keyboard. A pleasure to type on.
- Touchpad. It drags at first, but once you get some finger oil on it, and change the pointer speed, it's one of the best that I've used. Very smooth two finger scroller. Support for customized two and three finger click.
- Screen. Bright and easy to read at 30 degree angles.
- Battery life. Yes, it will do over 10 hours.
- Weight/size. 1 inch thin and very light.
- Body. Love the brushed black metal look on the case.
- Asus facial recognition login. Didn't think that I would care, but it's nice to have the computer log in, without touch, when I'm sitting in front of it.
- Asus FastBoot (not the BIOS fast boot). This lets you configure which programs load during startup and which load after. Speeds up the boot quite a bit.
- Decent speakers. Not ear-destroying, but suitable for the size. Much better than most netbooks.

Cons
- Placement of touchpad. It still registers my palm as I'm typing even at the extreme setting. Downloaded the new touchpad driver, but that didn't fix. Still looking for a solution. This is by far the most frustrating problem. UPDATE: The TouchFreeze utility seems to almost fix the issue.
- Case still shows fingerprints.
- Web cam is low res and has difficulty in low light (haven't tried different drivers yet).

Excellent Ultra-Portable Laptop at a Great Price!

Review Date: October 27, 2009
Reviewer: TJ, Colorado
I recently purchased the Asus UL30A-X5 through Amazon and am very pleased with my decision. Let me first begin by briefly explaining what I was looking for in a new laptop, as I believe that will give the reader better information when deciding if this laptop is right for them. I am currently a student on a budget and was looking for the following: 1) Less than $700 in price, 2) Screen size between 13-14", 3) Windows 7 already installed (I didn't want an older computer with Vista that I would have to manually upgrade to Win 7 myself), 4) At least 320GB HD, 3 GB DDR3 RAM, and a Pentium Core 2 Duo SU7300 equivalent or greater processor, 5) Thin and light, and 6) 4+ solid hours of battery life. Although a netbook offers a small size and easy portability, I didn't want to sacrifice power and performance for everyday tasks. On the other hand, I also didn't want a large "desktop replacement" laptop that would be a hassle to carry around or difficult to take with me anytime I was away from home. In summary, I wanted a laptop that offered a good combination of power, performance, and size for my money. With that being said, here is my impression thus far after 2 days of using this computer:

Pros:
-Performance: Able to smoothly and efficiently handle everything I have wanted to do to this point. It is even faster than my 3 year old 15.6" Dell Inspiron that I originally paid $1300 for at the time.
-Size and Weight: Couldn't be happier with the sleek look and light weight. It looks even better in person than in the pictures.
-Quality: Some people may think you are sacrificing quality for a laptop with these specs for under $700. I think this computer is built very well, and would argue it stands up to the much more expensive or name-brand models in the same class.
-Warranty: The accidental protection warranty offers an extra piece of mind, which is also something not often included without an additional cost in other laptops.
-Keyboard: Very easy to use, great design!
-Mousepad: I love the textured touchpad on this model. It is difficult to see in the pictures, but the touchpad is actually not a traditional "pad", but a bunch of tiny dots that track the movement of your finger. Also, I really like the extra features such as being able to scroll up or down a page by using two fingers anywhere on the pad.

Cons:
-The only thing that I am not too excited about is the small (or "smaller" when compared to my larger laptop) mouse buttons below the touchpad. This might be something that just takes a little getting used to, but it is more difficult to click the buttons than on my older laptop. Again, this is my first 13.3" laptop so it probably just comes with the nature of a smaller laptop and I will get used to it with time, but it's just something I wanted to point out if you are transitioning from a large laptop to a smaller one.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Sure, there are better laptops on the market as some will argue, but only if you are willing to spend $1000+. This computer definitely earns "5 stars" and I think anyone who is looking for an affordable, ultra-portable laptop with powerful performance will be very happy as well.
Cheap and good

Reviewer: A. Quan,
I really love this computer despite the facts that it has some issues. I really like the finish, it's very thin, less than 1 inch, but by no means is thinner than the macbook air. The casing is very sexy, it looks very nice from all angles. The keyboard is amazing, the only problem is that it has a little flex but its not the end of the world I can type pretty well. The most annoying thing might be the touchpad, whenever you type and you have your hands positioned close to it, the touchpad might register some click while you type. A lot of people are talking about the battery life of this computer that it won't even reach 10 hours, I can confirm I get 11+ hours on this lappie, Windows 7 is much more energy efficient than Vista (note: I tested under wireless off, lowest screen brightness, power saving mode, word 2007). I really enjoy the price point its less than $700, which is the perfect price for the performance.

PROS:
- Stylish, very sexy looking.
- Keyboard feels amazing.
- Multi-touch track pad works well
- Fast compared to a netbook (C2D, 4GB DDR3)
- Battery life 11+ hours
- Smart Logon, very nice cool feature
- Big hard drive 500GB
- LED screen has nice viewing angles
- Very light and portable
- The charger is very small and portable too.
- Loud quality speakers from small size
- Warranty, 1 Year of accidental Damage
- Price its a deal!

CONS:
- Fingerprint magnet (inside and outside)
- Loud Hard drive (a little annoying)
- Little flex on the keyboard
- ASUS bloatware
- Intel GMA4500MHD, where's the UL30A-VT? can't do gaming
- It doesn't cook, do laundry, or cleans my room.

This computer is perfect for students, and travelers. Recommended
I'm very pleased with my UL30A-X5!

This little laptop is a wonder. It's a beautiful piece of hardware, runs very quick, multitasks great, is dead silent, and I'm getting 10-12 hours of battery life on stock configuration.

I've never seen anything like this; you just keep using it and using it and using it. Even when I've got every MS Office program running at once + a bunch of Firefox tabs + iTunes playing music, I still get 6-7 hours.

I was pleasantly surprised how little bloatware came with it. The only annoying piece of software I really needed to uninstall was some antivirus program. MS Office Home/Student came preinstalled on a free trial, but I was going to use that anyway so they saved me the installation.

Windows 7 runs great on this laptop. Power management and networking features work beautifully. The great sleep/wake functionality in Windows 7 makes startup time largely irrelevant, but even when you do have to start up from scratch it's nice and speedy. There are lots of nice little touches to this machine that let you know Asus is a really class act. Things like attractive on-screen displays for volume and brightness adjustment for example.

My only nitpick is that the trackpad is a little jumpy. It's a little hard to land the cursor onto some of the smaller buttons, like scrollbar arrows. This is probably a driver issue, so it likely will be fixed soon enough. The keyboard is very spacious and pleasant to type on.

Overall I'm extremely satisfied with my UL30A-X5.
Awesome, period.

Best in class, price/performance. ASUS is excellent quality, highly recommended. Much better than netbook, better performance/battery in similar form factor.

pro:
+battery life: 12 hour max is true for light use (word processing), 8 hours heavy use is extremely reasonable, much better than 4 hours max for other laptops
+performance: low voltage core2 duo is powerful- even though it says 1.3ghz, still far outperforms any atom/turion/pentium/celeron budget trash processors + 4gb DDR3 RAM, 500gb HD, excellent
+price: a few years ago this class of ultrathin laptop would start at $3k+ (this is why technology is sweet - constant improvement)
+design: brushed aluminum top is pretty, laptop is really thin, light and portable, lasts the entire day
+windows 7: is quite good
+keyboard: good.
+screen: very clear and bright, better than my old dell lcd
+speakers! I really like the altec lansing built-in speakers, they go pretty loud and are clearer than most laptop speakers. they are in the front of the laptop pointing down, so you can still hear them when you close the lid

note these points:
-integrated graphics: no heavy gaming on this
-no bluetooth: actually I never use bluetooth so this is a positive, saves battery
-no DVD drive: just be aware that you need an external drive if you need this capacity. but with everything on the internet now, DVD is kind of like floppy disk now, might as well save weight + battery
-glossy: wipe it off every few days, good habit in general ;) (on matte surfaces, even if it doesnt look dirty it is still dirty, might as well know when it is dirty with glossy surface...)

btw I bought this computer for my gf, she loves it.

Nice computer for the price

This is the second laptop I have purchased, both of which were Compaq.

I got this laptop to upload pictures, surf the internet, and for general use around the house. The monitor is great and the picture is crisp and bright. The speed of this laptop is just what I had hoped for. I love the keypad that this laptop has...a big plus for the price!

I got a great deal on this laptop. I wanted a good laptop without having a huge bottom line to spend. I would recommend this laptop...Great little laptop! I don't regret sticking with Compaq.

The options available on this laptop, including the battery life are very good. I am able to work on things for hours and not worry about the battery dying.

The overall feel of this laptop is also great...it is smooth and sleek and looks great just sitting on the counter.

very pleased with this computer

Reviewer: A. Wasserman,

I bought this computer to replace a 4 year old Toshiba laptop that cost twice as much.
This Compaq was easy to set-up and it's a pleasure to use.
The processor is a single core combined with 2 gigs of RAM and it handles
basic computing with little stress.
The screen has brightness to spare and you can tweak the sound quality.
This computer runs cool on AC or battery power.(much cooler than the Toshiba)
I am very pleased with this computer and windows7 too.

I bought this for use while traveling in my motorhome and for this purpose it is all I need and takes up little space which is limited in a motorhome. With cell phone, laptop, home on wheels, and being a senor it makes getting away from my small town not so scary for an old lady!
Good for the money.

A good buy. A good basic laptop with a good screen. Pretty fast for the money and good applications included especially for e-mail. Not awfully robust. We are on our second one, a fall off the desk did in the hard drive in the first one and we found it to be the same price to purchase new as to replace the hard drive.
Compaq - great screen, great price, very wrong on battery life.

I bought this machine recently with a few goals in mind. Primarily I would use it at the house, but maybe every few months I fly somewhere and thought I could use it to play movies on the flight. The materials say 4.5 hour battery life. I brought it home, charged it overnight, then cleaned off all the useless programs, turned off anything I didn't need, like wireless, copied a movie I recorded off TV onto the harddrive, and turned the screen brightness way down. I barely got to 2 hours. I recharged it over night, and got the same result. I tried it one more time, and even with the sound off, I couldn't get past 2 hours. On the plus side, while plugged in the screen resolution is great, the touch pad has a very elegant touch ( much better than the HP dm3-1130us I ended up with) and while it is heavy, it isn't much heavier than the competition. I didn't test it much in the way of speed, though I thought most of the keys worked well and had a nice feel. If they didn't exaggerate the battery life so much, I would not have bought it. If it came with an 8 or 12 cell battery, I might have kept it. I instead went with a smaller screen and no optical drive, hope the battery on that one lasts longer.

I purchased this to be used like a netbook, except bigger and with all the benefits of a laptop. For $320 (Best Buy) you can't go wrong. For a light mobile laptop that is as quick as you need it to be and offers all the features a netbook doesn't, this is a perfect alternative. This will make a perfect laptop for a teen, college student or the person on the run. This isn't a Toshiba high end laptop, but for surfing the Internet, using Office and connecting it to my cable line and recording TV, this thing handles it all with no problems and does it fairly quickly. The graphics and sound quality is pretty good, and the 15" screen is perfect for watching TV. I am impressed and I am glad I came upon this opportunity instead of going with a netbook for just a bit more. This is a nice laptop and a steal for what I paid, even for the price offered on Amazon, but I recommend checking around (Best Buy on-line). You can't go wrong, Toshiba makes great products and from what I have seen in the week of using this, this is one of them.

Incredible computer for the price!

I bought this computer three weeks ago from Best Buy for 349. I can't believe the value for the price. I love windows 7 -- it is much quicker than vista and they have added some very nice features. All the MS Office programs load quick as well as any other program I have used. It comes preloaded with Norton Internet Security. I really hate it when they load programs to get you hooked for 30 days free and then remind you every hour that it is time to buy, however, Norton is a very good fit for this computer and it doesn't seem to eat up any processing speed running in the background. I'm going to wait another week then part with some hard earned money for the annual subscription. The only negative with this computer is that the cooling fan cycles on and off which can be annoying if you are working in a quiet area. It does it job, though and keeps the computer cool. Bottom line: Unless you are a power hungry gamer, you can't go wrong with this computer.
Great Computer for the price

My grandparent's less-than two year old Compaq decided to give out very prematurely. It had similar issues to what Xbox 360's are having, if your curious. It's semi-fixed now, but that's beside the point :P Anyway, I found one of these at Best Buy for $320 so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was a little disappointed when I realized it lacked duel core, but honestly the new Celerons are miles ahead of the earlier models.

Now, I can't vouch for what was originally loaded seeing as I removed Windows 7 and loaded Windows Vista SP2. However, with a clean slate, it runs very well. It boots exceptionally fast and doesn't struggle with anything we throw at it. Youtube HD, hulu, flash-based sites, etc, it all works very well. Honestly there's not much else their computer is used for, but most any basic tasks should be handled quite well. Heat is manages pretty well. It's not as cool as my Core 2, but better than their old laptop (Athlon X2) and pretty resonable when using basic features.

I suppose my only real complaints would be the cosmetics and the battery life. Cosmetics is minor. It's a larger laptop than most 15.6" with more empty space around the keyboard than's really desired. There are also no soft buttons as you may see in the pictures, but those usually remain untouched on my machines. It does, however, have a nice volume roller along the front, so that's a nice plus!

As for battery life, two hours is probably stretching it. I'll use it off the plug while I'm at their house and probably can squeeze around 2 hours out of it using very basic things such as Meebo or browsing this site. Once you start watching Youtube videos, the life (as with most lappies) drops dramatically.

All in all, a good laptop for basic usage. It's more aimed for the desktop replacement segment than portability though, so don't expect to be carrying it around all that much.

This notebook has a 15.6-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). Its widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio is designed to present websites without lots of left-right scrolling, as well as with a smoother line of sight. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M, which uses shared video memory (up to 1750 MB allocated from the system memory). This graphics card is built with Intel Clear Video technology, which delivers clearer, more detailed images by eliminating many of the jagged edges and video artifacts seen when viewing interlaced content and features powerful color control to ensure videos are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out.

Dual-Core Pentium Power

Ready to move up to a dual-core? This
Intel Pentium processor-based PC is a good place to start. The Intel Pentium processor is the fast dual-core that lets you surf the web and run multiple applications simultaneously. So you can browse, IM, download music or transfer photos all at once. And use office applications, too.

With the 2.1 GHz Intel Pentium T4300 dual-core processor, you'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. It has a 1 MB L2 cache and an 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Acer Multi-Gesture Touchpad

A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more.

The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse.

What a Beauty!

After making a lot of comparisons between the various laptops being offered since Windows 7 was released I found the Acer 4111 to be an outstanding buy at $479.99 through Amazon. It has so many nice features, 4 gigs of memory, 4 USB slots, a built in modem, 2.1 gig CPU and I could go on and on. It is a long list of features. I have only had it for 4 days and am impressed with it in so many ways. So far I am pleased with Windows 7. It seems pretty solid and it does have some nice touches to it. A word of caution on this model is that it does not come with backup DVD's. You will need at least 4 blank DVD disks and the built in backup program works very smoothly.
One irritant I ran into was a very annoying Macaffe (trial version) pop-up window every few minutes. I solved that by deleting the program. As the Acer comes with a 320 gig hard drive you will find that you have only about 260 gigs free. There is a lot of junk on the hard drive that could come off to free up more space.
I recommend this Acer and gave it 5 stars. I also am very well pleased with Amazon.
best computer I've had

I must have owned at least 50 computers (about 8 laptops) by now and this is an example of how they just keep getting better.

They display is improved and really gives color and sharpness to your drab old photos. The large square keyboard keys are a joy to type on. Mousepad takes some getting used to since you have to use the left side since the right is reserved for (new W 7) pinching etc. But there is a key to disable the pad (and then use a USB mouse)

The unit stays remarkably cool and the battery lasts 3.5-4.5 hrs (I think)

Seems to pick up more wireless signals and stronger

Incidently the notebook has 4 usb inputs! - 2 on each side!

Volume + and - keys are nice when watching DVD's

It doesn't have built in bluetooth but evidently another model must because it has a (disbled) bluetooth on off key

It comes in a small box with just the battery and charger and very little literature (most is loaded on the hard disk and available online. good - less clutter

I made the single repair disk but haven't done the big 5 disk image. I also deleted MacAfee

Windows 7 seems amazingly solid and simple. By far microsoft's best effort. It eliminates a lot of clicks. Features a dedicated show desktop hover click in lower right. Simplifications abound. After a while you seem to forget how easy everything is to do without losing the way you have done thing for a long time. You can think more about what you are doing and not on how to get the computer there

So far only one problem with Win 7 (perhaps my recent update fixed it) is that the desktop has twice lost icons I have placed there
Wonderful buy all in all...

Reviewer: Lizzy,
I've been itching to review this laptop ever since I bought it.

I was one of the people who bought it on Amazon even before the release date. I was in need of a new laptop and was looking practically all over the internet for good deals on laptops. I almost picked a not so good laptop before I checked my email and found Amazon's message about new laptops available with windows 7.

I checked at all the computers by ACER (yes, I specifically wanted an acer because I haven't ever had problems with the Acer computers I've used). I found this computer, read all the specs, and oh you know it.. I jumped on it! Was so eager to receive it that I paid for 2 day shipping.

AT 479.99, this was a great deal, so i didn't at all mind paying the extra bucks for fast delivery. Amazon, true to their reputation, delivered this faster than I expected.
I opened my laptop's box, and it was love at first sight. Turned it on, got on the internet, and started typing, and... that was when the problem started.

The keyboard seemed nothing short of annoying! I am a pretty fast 'typer', and having to repeat practically everything i typed really got on my nerves.
I immediately knew I had to call Acer, after all, this came with a one year warranty (thanks to God). The Acer customer service tried all they could to help me 'fix' this keyboard issue (like most reviewers on here have already mentioned), but all to no avail. I was eventually told to send in the laptop for repair.
I had to spend additional bucks to send in my laptop to the Acer office in Texas. I wasn't getting mad though, cos apart from the typing issue, I had already fallen in love with everything about the laptop... and windows 7 was just so lovely (Well done Windows. Don't worry about what that Modern-day, hip dressing dude says about you..lol)

Anyhoo, I now have my laptop back, and the keyboard is working PERFECTLY! I think if I found this laptop at the current price Amazon is selling it, I'd close my eyes and still buy it. It's worth every penny (Then again, If you think about it... original price + 2 day shipping + gas price to staples to ship it back to acer + shipping fee kinda all equals this current price). And worry not if your keyboard is misbehaving, Just send it in back to ACER.

I know I've said enough already, but I just wanna add, the huge screen is a big plus when watching movies, videos, etc.
The numerical pad is a bonus. I thought it would hinder my typing, and take up unnecessary space, but it is not.
The Webcam is Awesome.. so clear and works good with skype! The microphone is loud too, and speakers work great..

The mouse pad was slightly getting on my nerves, but all that resolved when i disabled the extra gestures, by clicking on Mouse from control panel. I also removed the plastic cover on the mouse pad (the one with the multi-gesture touch pad picture on it), and all these changes helped.
Ok. That's about it.. :-)
Awesome Laptop, Amazing Price!

This laptop is awesome. The widescreen is awesome and the HDMI output is great. If you have Netflix, you can instantly watch movies online and use the HDMI to watch the movies on your HDTV. I only wish this graphics card could output to 1080p!

Windows 7 seems pretty fast. Like other laptops, just make sure you get rid of all the bloatware programs such as Norton, etc. I am now using Vipre antivirus and is pretty fast because it requires little use of RAM to run.

I agree with the other reviews, the keyboard is a little whack, especially if you have larger hands, but you can get used to it. The biggest issue with me is the arrow keys. I think they are too extremely small. But for the price and all the other features this thing brings, it's worth it. The numerical keys are also great and convenient (had a laptop before that didn't have it).

I don't use the mouse pad too much because I use a logitech notebook mouse that has a tiny USB dongle that you can barely notice. You can also turn off the mouse pad, which is nice so it doesn't get in the way when you are typing.

Haven't used the webcam yet but is nice to have it there. Think it's pretty common these days anyway in most other laptops. I didn't get this from Amazon but got it from Newegg for $360 after Bing Cash Back. Plus with it having 4GB of RAM, it's nice to know that it comes with great hard drive space and you can rely on some speed.

It connected to my wireless network with ease and is fast. I don't have a Wireless N setup, but is nice to know that it will catch it if I do come across a "N" network.

If you aren't too picky, you will love this laptop and has great features. It might not be a gaming laptop, but know it can play movies well. It runs pretty quiet as well.
An excellent value!

I got this laptop primarily to act as my game machine while away from my desktop PC during Christmas break. It's the first PC I've encountered that runs Windows 7, and is slick. After an initial four or five hours making backup discs with the DVD burner (necessary, as it does not come w/ a Win7 CD) I was able to settle in and begin installing software.

Speaking of which, there's a fair amount of junk software pre-installed, including a great number of Acer-relevant programs, the majority of which you might not find useful. (A few possible exceptions: the Acer backup utilities, and perhaps the Acer multimedia software.) The laptop comes preinstalled with Microsoft Works and a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office. AFAICT, it's safe enough to uninstall quite a lot of it. Being a computer expert myself, and knowing my particular needs, I installed a bunch of software myself: Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome, OpenOffice 3.1, Skype and Dungeons and Dragons Online.

(Aside: after resizing the main NTFS partition, I also managed to get Kubuntu 9.10 installed so I could get some web development work done; overall Kubuntu runs very capably on the system w/ the only minor glitch being the oversensitivity of the trackpad; when the trackpad lock is engaged, the trackpad ceases to function until next reboot. Since I use a wireless trackball, however, this is not a significant issue.)

Finding and connecting to WIFI points is a breeze in Windows 7, and surfing is as you would expect. The keyboard is full-size, responsive and comfortable, and the placement of the trackpad doesn't significantly interfere with typing; if you find your mouse cursor jiggling about when typing, however, you can engage the trackpad lock, which under Win7 temporarily disengages the trackpad.

The webcam in this model is excellent. Skype found and connected to it flawlessly. I called a friend of mine and chatted with him; sound from the speakers was clear and crisp, and my friend claimed the video feed from the built-in webcam is way better than the external webcam plugged into my beefier desktop PC -- higher-resolution, jitter- and lag-free. One note, however: we discovered that the ambient microphone is sub-optimal, as its placement just above the middle of the keyboard tends to pick up each keystroke and transmit it as a "pong" sound over VOIP connections. The lesson: when on Skype, use an external headset.

Once I got the laptop back to my folks' place for Christmas, my buddy and I began playing DDO, and here's where I began to see the first serious issues: once a certain amount of time had passed, the system would start to hard-reboot, usually with a very quick BSOD. We figured out that the 3D graphics card was the issue, as it was generating too much heat for the fans to vent. The solution was to place the entire laptop on top of an inverted cookie sheet. (A laptop fan plate would probably serve better.) The video card is otherwise perfectly fine, suitable for running DDO in DirectX 10. Although the video card uses up to 1795MB of the 4GB system memory I experienced no major issues with jitter or lag, and for all non-3D-gaming activities the system seems to be just fine. Note that for 3D games you may have to turn down details or completely turn some video features off; the optimal settings detector in DDO preset a lot of details that 1) I didn't need and 2) slowed down gameplay a little bit. Once these features were turned off I was able to get down to business and play was smooth and responsive.

Windows 7 is excellent. It looks great, works quickly and generally stays out of my way. Apart from video-card overheating (no fault of the software) the system is completely rock-stable. The control panel has exploded since the last version of Windows I use (XP), but other than occasionally needing to stumble through it to change one option I've got no complaints.

I won't recite every detail of the hardware -- the product description here covers everything. I will note the build quality is significant, and there's a lot of nice touches. Slight complaint: the screen and top case are vulnerable to fingerprints, but a quick wipe with a cloth does the trick. Great machine

Reviewer: Scott Coleman,
I am a techno idiot, so if you want a review that goes in detail about gigs, jigs and migs, then this isn't it. If you want to know if this computer can get you online while on the road, listen to music, watch movies and just plain rock your world, then I am your man. I pulled this thing out of the box about 2 weeks ago and fired it up. I bought a router so I could use it anywhere at home. I have had no issues with it and the fact is it is much faster then my HP desktop. All preinstalled software works perfectly and the picture quality while watching video is perfect. The first night I had it I watched my DVD of Cool Hand Luke on it and was just amazed at the quality. Bottom line? I love it!
Great balance of value and performance

I took a good look at this laptop when I was shopping around for a new computer for my mother-in-law, and while I ended up purchasing the HP DV6 there was a lot to like about the G60 line. The HP G60 (and G70) are aimed at the home user looking for a desktop size screen but otherwise want traditional notebook specs (good battery life, lighter weight, etc...). While not a true "desk-note" (it uses mobile cpus, most desk-notes use desktop class cpus) it will fill the "desk top" role for most users. The build quality is pretty good. Far above the basic "Compaq" line but not quite as nice as the DV line from HP.

What it is good at: Web browsing, light gaming (does well with anything other than 3D games), office apps (word, excel, power point, etc...) and basic media tasks (playing and creating MP3s, watching movies, editing short home movies).

What it is not good at: 3D gaming, editing large video files, or any heavy computational tasks.

Here is a quick break down of the specs:

Display: This 16" screen is a good bright display that works best indoors, but can be used outdoors except in direct sunlight. A good display is an HP trademark and this one lives up to that standard.

CPU: The Intel Pentium T4300 is a good dual core CPU for light home use. It is the newest version of the Pentium line and is based off the most advanced of the "Core2" processors. (Pentiums are just "Core" or "Core2" CPUS with less cache and slower clock speeds.) I'm a big fan of this CPU for people who mostly want to web browse - it's got two cores so you can surf while the anti-virus does it's job so why pay more for a CPU you won't use? If you plan on doing any serious gaming this is not the CPU for you (though it's a lot better than older Pentiums based off the old "Core" cpus).

Memory: 3GB is plenty for light home use. Again - plenty for web surfing and playing movies. Not enough for serious gaming.

Graphics: Comes with Intel's new 4500 integrated graphics. While this is a great improvement over previous Intel graphics parts it's still not going to run high-end 3D games at any decent resolution. Old games and non-3D games will be fine.

HDD: 320GB is far more than most light home users will use. I know few using more than 60GB. However anyone who plans on editing home movies will need more space than this (and more memory, and a faster cpu...).

Battery: 6 cell lithium ION. Pretty standard. Gives you about 2-3 hours of light use. If you order it custom from HP you can get an 8 cell. However if you are looking for good battery life you really don't want the G60 line. Look for something with a 14" display and at least an 8 cell battery.

Wireless: Most notebooks from high to low end are using the same few wireless chipsets. This one is covers a wide wireless spectrum including the newest "Wireless N".

Weight: 6.7lbs is a good weight for a screen this large. You will find them up to 8lbs. Again if you are looking for serious mobility you want a thin-and-light, but if you want something you can easily carry from room to room this should suit you.
Can't Beat Price/Performance

I received this notebook a couple days ago, and I'm currently in the process of cleaning all the "bloatware" off of it (though pretty much any computer maker is going to install this on systems they sell, this is really my main problem with HP products). It should run Vista fine after that (though I may end up "downgrading" to XP -- I plan on doing IT work with this notebook and need specific software tools that I know run on XP -- the 10-key is definitely a plus for entering IP addresses quickly for IT work). This notebook gets a 3.5 performance rating in Vista (the weakest component is the integrated video, but that is to be expected). One thing you don't really see in the pictures on Amazon is that the top of the shell is very shiny black, and will easily show fingerprints, and will quite likely be susceptible to scratches, so make sure you get a good case if you want to maintain its appearance. At the current pricing, this thing is a steal (especially when you factor in the free upgrade to Windows 7, coming out this fall).

Update 10/17/09: I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate (I wanted the Bitlocker drive encryption feature, so I will not be using the free upgrade of Windows 7 Home Premium HP will be sending me) last night without a hitch -- I did not need to download any drivers from HP and the notebook successfully connected to the Internet after only having to enter the wireless network key. The notebook is much snappier with Windows 7 than with Vista. Still, an excellent value, even though the OS I just loaded onto it cost almost half as much as the notebook originally did.
Awesome for Linux

Reviewer: Snavvy,
I agree with the comments about HP support. They are overseas, know little about the product, and are idiots.

I repartitioned the drive (after shrinking the Windows partition with instructions from ubuntuguide dot org) and installed Kubuntu 9.04 Linux within 1 hour. Everything worked right away -- from webcam, to wireless, to video, to VMWare. This is one of the best laptops for Linux. I consider myself proficient at computers, so I also installed a few other OSs (on multiple partitions). No problems. I love this laptop. It is fast, and the widescreen great for movies. After 2 months I have discovered no problems (other than that Windows Vista sucks, but we all knew that, and the need to remove all the junkware that HP pre-installs.) But don't use the recovery disk(s) -- it wipes the entire hard drive clean and wipes out all your data. I learned this the hard way. HP sucks at software (and support), even though the hardware is great.

Great Laptop

This is my 2nd HP product, 1st laptop. Performs beautifully, and very easy to get running out of the box.
